Google Censorship

It has come to our attention here at Off the Rails, that one of our contributors, Jennifer Kiley, is having her blog censored by Google/Chrome.

Trying to access her blog the other day, we were met, out of the blue, by a “Stop: Dangerous Site Ahead” warning which blocked access. After much research and hair-pulling, Jennifer discovered that Google was cherry-picking words from her blogs, words related to psychiatric conditions and drugs and big pharma, to human sexuality, and what might be considered radical politics, etc, even words and phrases taken totally out of context in poems, for Christ’s sake!

To all who believe in the first amendment and freedom of expression, beware! You could be next. Time to fight back.

Big Brother Google is watching.

Truth vs. the GOP’s BIG LIES

In my lifetime, every election has seen more and more (mostly) white, poor-to-middle class Americans buying into the GOP’s big lies and voting against their own self-interest. They latch onto the fear of “the other” (minorities, immigrants, women, LGBTQ, you name it) being peddled in place of honest policy by those who are deep in the caverous pockets of the 1%, and despite mountains of evidence to the contrary, refuse to let go.

With the Iowa caucuses just around the corner, we here at Off the Rails are going to try to combat the Big Lies with – shock! – a little truth. We may be preaching to the choir, but always better to light a match than simply curse the darkness.

For starters, a brief video by Robert Reich, economist, former Sec. of Labor under President Clinton, and all round progressive guy.

This is truth, verifiable economic truth. No more, no less. Listen and remember when you go to the polls.

See the world…

“Stuff your eyes with wonder, live as if you’d drop dead in ten seconds.
See the world. It’s more fantastic than any dream made or paid for in factories.”

…Ray Bradbury, Fahrenheit 451

Ever get the feeling that humanity is careening off the rails? That fancy and fiction, witches and wizards, even dragons, are but pale shadows before the daily ignorance, injustice, and insanity swirling round us?

In this country alone, listening to the Republican candidates for president is like stepping back in history to Berlin, 1933. A reality-show star thinks he can rule the nation because, well, trust him, he’s rich, he’s great, and he’ll raise Douglas McArthur from the grave to fight WW III and sort all those pesky international messes. A neurosurgeon – who you think would know better – doesn’t believe in evolution. Anyone who is not white is suspect and lives in fear simply for looking cross-eyed at the wrong policeman. Women are considered incapable of making decision about their own bodies. Thousands of lives lost to gun violence are nothing compared to an antiquated second amendmant that did not account for a standing army or automatic weapons. And the separation of church and state has been so turned on its head that, if some had their way, we would be living in a fundamentalist theocracy. (Irony is lost on the extreme right.)

These are but a few of the vile bothers of the world that rend the spirit and hurt the teeth.

This space stands against them. All.

With rants and raves, reflections and rhetoric, in word and image, we aim to see the world as it is, not as the blind would have us see it. To make a small dent in our corner of the universe. To follow Ray Bradbury’s charge:

“do your own bit of saving, and if you drown,
at least die knowing you were heading for shore.”

Hope you will join us.
